It’s Never Too Late: How Strength Training Changed Everything for Women Over 40 in Point Cook
Sarah didn’t plan to cry on her 45th birthday. But there she was, standing in her kitchen in Sanctuary Lakes, staring at the cake her husband had brought home, and feeling drained.
She wasn’t sad about the number. She was sad about how she felt inside.
Tired. Stiff. Heavier than she’d been in years, despite not eating any differently. She’d wake up in the morning, and her lower back would take twenty minutes to unknot itself. She even stopped taking the stairs at work, not because she couldn’t, but because she just didn’t feel like it anymore. The energy that powered her through her thirties had quietly left.
She tried to start exercising a few times again. First, it was a gym membership that lasted three weeks. Next, a few YouTube workout videos that felt designed for people half her age followed. Nothing stuck.
Standing there in her kitchen, she thought: “Is this just what 45 feels like? Is this all there is to it now?” Well, it isn’t. And that’s exactly what I want to talk to you about.
The Moment Everything Changed
A few months after that birthday, Sarah walked through my door at Fujiwhara Personal Training in Point Cook. She told me she’d driven past the studio dozens of times and kept telling herself she’d go in when she felt ready. But she realised she was never going to feel ready. She just had to go.
She was nervous and told me straight up, “I don’t want to feel embarrassed. I don’t want to be the unfit one.”
I hear this a lot. When you’ve spent years feeling like your body has been gradually letting you down, the idea of putting it on show at a gym feels intimidating. But here’s what I’ve seen from over a decade of training women in Point Cook and Sanctuary Lakes. The moment you start, that feeling disappears. Fast.
We started slowly and smartly. No bootcamp mentality. No go hard or go home attitude. Just well-designed, progressive strength training, building her body’s capacity from the ground up.
What Surprised Her the Most
Six weeks in, Sarah sent me a message that I’ve received in various forms from so many clients. “Emma, my back doesn’t hurt anymore. Like, it just doesn’t.”
This is one of the first things women over 40 notice when they start proper strength training, and it almost always catches them off guard. They came with the expectation of losing weight. They weren’t expecting their chronic stiffness to ease or enjoy better sleep. They certainly weren’t expecting to walk to their cars after a session feeling more energised than when they arrived.
But this is exactly what strength training does for a woman’s body at this stage of life. When your muscles get stronger, they support your joints better, and your posture improves. Your spine is held in place by actual muscle, not habit and hope. The aches you had accepted as normal start to fade, because they were never permanent. They were just a sign that your body needed to be trained.
By week eight, Sarah’s energy had shifted noticeably. She was taking the stairs again at work. She was sleeping peacefully through the night. She also told her husband she felt like herself again for the first time in years.
What Most People Get Wrong About Training After 40
I want to push back on something, because I see it holds women back all the time: The belief that you’ve missed the window.
That somehow, if you didn’t build a strong, fit body in your twenties or thirties, it’s too late to achieve it now. The belief that your metabolism is broken, that the weight won’t shift, and that pain is just part of getting older.
None of that is true.
Your body responds to strength training at 40, 50, and beyond. Sometimes even more dramatically than it would have done in your younger years, because your body has been starved of the right kind of workout. The women I train in their forties and fifties are often the strongest, most motivated, most consistent clients I work with. They know themselves. They’re training for themselves, not for anyone else. They’re ready in a way they simply weren’t at 25.
What does change after 40 is that your body needs smarter training, not harder training. You need progressive strength work that gradually increases what your body can handle so it adapts and grows stronger. You need functional movement and exercises that apply to your real, everyday life. You need a built-in recovery plan as well, because your body grows stronger during rest, not during the session itself. And you need consistency over intensity. Two or three well-designed sessions per week will outperform six punishing ones every single time.
This is what I focus on at Fujiwhara Personal Training. Sessions that are challenging, varied, and built specifically around you.
How Often Should You Actually Train?
One of the most common questions I get from women starting out is how many times a week they need to train.
The answer might surprise you. Two to three times per week is the sweet spot for most women over 40.
More than that, your body doesn’t have enough time to recover and adapt. Anything less than that and you lose all the gains before the next session. Two to three well-structured sessions, each around 30 to 45 minutes, are enough to build a real, meaningful base for strength and fitness training.
This is also why personal training works so well at this stage of life. When your time is limited, and your body is valuable, you don’t want to waste any of it on training that doesn’t deliver. Every session we complete together has a purpose.
Where Is Sarah Now?
Sarah is still training with me. She’s been coming to my studio in Point Cook for over a year now, and all traces of the woman who once walked in nervous and apologetic are gone. It’s a different person who turns up on a Tuesday morning ready to work.
She lifts more than she ever expected to, and her back pain is a distant memory. She’s lost weight, but more than that, she has gained something. Strength, yes, but also a quiet confidence in her body that she hadn’t felt in a long time.
She told me recently, “I just wish I’d started sooner.”
I told her what I’ll tell you now. You started exactly when you were supposed to. The only time it’s too late is when you never start.
